Before Baby Arrives

Finding the right hospital

As you plan and prepare for the birth of your child, you will want to find a hospital that meets your specific needs. Palmetto General has a proven record of delivering excellence.

Along with prenatal care from a birthing staff that makes you feel welcome and comfortable, we offer close and convenient services like infant CPR and child-birthing classes.

What to Take

A Pre-Delivery Packing List

For Labor

  • Pillows from home
  • Music and an iPod, or CD player
  • Camcorder and camera with memory cards, charged batteries & accessories
  • Massage tools (oils, wooden massager, etc.)
  • Vaseline/Lip Balm
  • Reading material
  • Baby book to have footprints done by the nurse
  • Focal point (picture or other object you would prefer)
  • Socks for mom
  • Snacks for coach

Postpartum Bag

  • List of phone numbers and email addresses so you can contact family members and friends
  • Several pairs of comfortable cotton underwear
  • A gown, robe & slippers
  • Toiletries (shampoo, brush/comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Change of clothes for yourself & your partner
  • Nursing pillow
  • Nursing bra & pads
  • Blanket for baby
  • Baby’s going home outfit
  • Infant car seat with instructions


Questions to Ask Your Doctor

  1. Where does the doctor admit his or her patients? What is your health insurance plan network?
  2. What are the after-hours and on-call procedures?
  3. How many people can be present during labor and delivery?
  4. Does the baby stay in the same room as you?
  5. What kind of breastfeeding support services are provided?
  6. When should I pre-register with the hospital?
  7. Should I choose a pediatrician prior to my baby’s birth?
