Romualdo J. Segurola, M.D., F.A.C.S.

DrSegurola-Our Team HeartDr. Romualdo J. Segurola specializes in cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery and is experienced in off-pump coronary bypass, heart & lung transplantation, aortic root construction, thoracic trauma & critical care, and thoracoscopic and laparoscopic-assisted surgery.

Dr. Segurola is one of the few surgeons in South Florida who is Triple-Boarded, with certifications in General Surgery, Trauma/Critical Care Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. After finishing medical school in the Dominican Republic, he completed a Research Fellowship in Vascular/Molecular Biology at Yale University School of Medicine, followed by a Surgical Residency at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Dr. Segurola went on to complete three Fellowships in Trauma & Critical Care from the University of Miami School of Medicine; and Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart & Lung Transplantation at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine (Lillehei Heart Institute), which is considered the birthplace of modern heart surgery. He has been published in several prestigious medical journals and has presented lectures to medical professionals and societies around the world, including the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

Efren Buitrago, M.D.

EfrenBuitrago,MD-TheVascularInsitute-OurTeamDr. Efran Buitrago specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, peripheral vascular surgery. He obtained his medical degree at the Universidad Nacional de Columbia and completed his residency and fellowship in General Surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Buitrago’s areas of interest and expertise include vascular surgery, endovascular surgery and thoracic surgery. He has participated in many presentations and has had several scientific studies published. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, and the American College of Chest Physicians.


Alfredo Rego, M.D., Ph.D.

Chairman, Section of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

Rego_ValveDr. Rego specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, endovascular therapies and minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Dr. Rego obtained his medical degree at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, followed by a Surgical Residency in General & Vascular Surgery at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. He then went on to complete a Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Physiology & Biophysics at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at Nova Southeastern University.

Jose R. Piñero, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Interventional Cardiologist, Medical Director of the Valve Clinic at Palmetto General Hospital

JosePinero,MD-ValveClinicOurTeamDr. Pinero has been serving the Miami community since the early 1980s and is well respected within the medical community.He has been a part of the Palmetto General Hospital team for almosttwo decades and was most recently appointed as the Medical Director of Palmetto General Hospital’s Heart Valve Clinic, which is a part of The Heart Institute at Palmetto General Hospital. Dr. Pinero oversees all clinical activities and medical procedures in the Valve Clinic, which is dedicated to offering patients some of the latest cardiac treatments by using a multidisciplinary team approach. Dr. Pinero has also served several hospital leadership positions, including Chief of Staff, Chairman of the ICU-CCU Committee, and played an active role as a member of the hospital’s board of directors. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Internal Medicine.Since 1983, Dr. Pinero has been honored as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr. Pinero completed his education at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine in Internal Medicine with special training in cardiology and even served as an assistant professor of medicine in 1984 at the University of Miami.
