Palmetto General Hospital Appoints New Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff

(February 15, 2016) –Dr. Raul Alonso, cardiologist, and Dr. Jorge Orta,  cardiac anesthesiologist, join the leadership team at Palmetto General Hospital as the Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff, respectively. The two physicians were elected by the hospital’s medical staff and will each serve a one-year term. 

As Chief of Staff, Dr. Alonso will lead the hospital’s medical staff of 514 physicians and will serve as a member of the hospital’s board of directors. Both Dr. Alonso and Dr. Orta will serve as liaisons between the hospital’s administrative staff and its medical staff members. They will also play a key role in making continuous quality improvements, as well as provide medical staff input for all major expansion and renovation projects.

“These physicians were elected because of their commitment to Palmetto General Hospital and their continued perseverance to deliver expert care to our community,” said CEO Ana Mederos. “We are pleased to welcome them into their new roles, as they will both serve as excellent representatives for our medical staff.”

Dr. Alonso has been a member of the medical staff at Palmetto General Hospital since 1999. He serves as the Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program that is run by the hospital in collaboration with Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Alonso graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine and went on to complete his residency in internal medicine, followed by his cardiology fellowship. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. 

Dr. Orta is the Medical Director of the anesthesiology department at Palmetto General Hospital and has been on staff since 2008. He attended medical school at The Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana in Cuba and completed his residency in internal medicine at Calixto Garcia General Hospital, also in Havana. He practiced internal medicine for five years before entering and completing a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Orta is board certified in anesthesiology and echocardiography and speaks three languages – English, Spanish and Portuguese.
