Palmetto General Hospital opened its doors in 1971 with just 50 beds. Today, our hospital serves more than 130,000 patients per year. From bariatrics to breast cancer imaging, we’ve received many designations for quality care. Meet Dr. Efren Buitrago, Medical Director of the Vascular Institute

Dr. Efren Buitrago is the Medical Director of the Vascular Institute at Palmetto General Hospital. Dr. Buitrago specializes in cardiothoracic surgery and peripheral vascular surgery. He obtained his medical degree at the Universidad Nacional de Columbia and completed his residency and fellowship in General Surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Buitrago's areas of interest and expertise include vascular surgery, endovascular surgery and thoracic surgery. He has participated in many presentations and has had several scientific studies published. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, and the American College of Chest physicians.
