Foods with Antioxidants & Why They’re Good for You

We know certain foods contain antioxidants, but what do they actually do and how do they work to fight free radicals? Let’s break it down.

Antioxidants are chemicals that interact with and neutralize free radicals, which prevent them from causing damage. Another name for antioxidants is “free radical scavengers.” Our bodies make some of the antioxidants, but we rely on external (exogenous) sources from our diet to obtain the remaining antioxidants we need.

Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals which can harm cells. Free radicals are formed naturally in the body and play an important role in many normal cellular processes. However, high concentrations of free radicals can be hazardous to the body and damage major components of cells, including DNA, proteins and cell membranes. It is believed that damage to cells and DNA by free radicals may contribute to cancer development and other health conditions.

  1. Grapes, especially dark ones
  2. Blueberries
  3. Red berries – raspberries and strawberries
  4. Dark chocolate
  5. Pecans
  6. Artichokes
  7. Goji berries
  8. Kale
  9. Red cabbage
  10. Beans
  11. Beets
  12. Spinach
  13. Coffee
