Palmetto's Bariatric Surgery Ranked Among Top 5% In U.S. By HealthGrades

Hialeah, FL – Palmetto General Hospital was ranked among the top 5 % in the nation for bariatric surgery according to a new study issued today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Based on this ranking, Palmetto General is one of only 48 hospitals in the nation to receive the 2010/2011 Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award™ from HealthGrades.

"At Palmetto General Hospital, our physicians and medical staff dedicate themselves to providing the highest quality care," said Ana Mederos, CEO of Palmetto General. "I'm proud of our bariatric team for making it possible to have this elite designation."

The fifth annual HealthGrades Bariatric Surgery Trends in American Hospitals Study is the largest annual study of its kind.

The study of objective patient outcomes evaluated all hospitals in 19 states over the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 using data obtained from state governments. Hospitals could not choose whether or not to participate in the study. In all, nearly 200,000 surgeries were evaluated for major inhospital complication rates at the 481 hospitals (out of more than 2,500) that performed bariatric surgeries in sufficient enough volumes to be rated.

Bariatric surgery can produce dramatic weight loss among the morbidly obese, who comprise about 5% of the national population according to the Centers for Disease Control. In many cases, individuals undergoing the procedure lose the equivalent of one-third of their body weight or more. Bariatric surgery has also been shown, in the morbidly obese, to significantly improve or cure a variety of major health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

"It is of the utmost importance for our team to provide the best quality care possible for our patients," said Dr. Jorge Sosa, Medical Director, Bariatric Center of Excellence at Palmetto General Hospital. "This designation is a testament to the care our team provides."

Palmetto and other top-performing hospitals in bariatric surgery had 43% fewer complications, on average, than hospitals performing at an average level, according to the HealthGrades study. Patients at top-performing hospitals had lengths of stay that averaged exactly two days, while patients at average hospitals had lengths of stay that averaged 2.21 days and patients at the poorest-performing hospitals had lengths of stay that averaged 2.48 days.

"This study shows, quite dramatically, that for bariatric surgery, it is important for patients to evaluate hospitals using objective information as they make their choice," said Rick May, MD, a vice president with HealthGrades and a co-author of the study.

Miami, FL — Palmetto General Hospital has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.

The recognition signifies that Palmetto General Hospital has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85% compliance for at least 24 months to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients.

Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations.

Under Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics, and anticoagulants in the hospital. They also receive alcohol/drug use and thyroid management counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged. Palmetto General Hospital has successfully implemented these quality measures for four quarters (01/01/09-12/31/09).

"The full implementation of national heart failure guideline recommended care is a critical step in preventing recurrent hospitalizations and prolonging the lives of heart failure patients," said Gregg C Fonarow, M.D., National Chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Director of Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center.

"The goal of the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program is to help hospitals like Palmetto General Hospital implement appropriate evidence-based care and protocols that will reduce disability and the number of deaths in these patients."

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show each year more than 292,200 people will die of heart failure.

"Palmetto General Hospital is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country and implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program will help us accomplish this goal by making it easier for our professionals to improve the long-term outcome for these patients," said Palmetto General Hospital CEO, Ana Mederos.

Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps Palmetto General Hospital’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes. The program includes quality-improvement measures such as care maps, discharge protocols, standing orders and measurement tools. This quick and efficient use of guideline tools will enable Palmetto General Hospital to improve the quality of care it provides heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks.

HIALEAH, FL – Palmetto General Hospital proudly announces that Dr. Abelardo Vargas, Medical Director of The Vascular Institute, successfully performed an Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (EVAR), a procedure new to the facility.

“At Palmetto General Hospital, we strive to add new procedures and services to better serve our community,” said CEO Ana Mederos. “Offering minimally invasive procedures is important for our patients, as these procedures generally offer less recovery time.”

EVAR is a minimally invasive way to repair an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA). The abdominal aorta supplies blood to the lower body. An AAA is formed when a part of the aorta expands or bulges. Pressure on an AAA can cause it to rupture, which can then lead to blood clots, internal bleeding or even death.

The EVAR procedure, an alternative to standard surgical repair, uses a small incision, usually in the groin, to insert a special catheter that has a stent graft on the tip. The stent is placed into the aorta to reline the area of the aneurysm, making the inner layer stronger. EVAR has several advantages over “open repair": less chance of mortality, less time in intensive care, less time in the hospital overall and earlier return to normal activity.

Palmetto General Hospital has an operating room dedicated to endovascular surgery. This OR, and incorporating EVAR into the hospital's realm of vascular services, allow physicians to offer quality care to vascular patients.

Learn More 1-800-823-5000

Online Resources

HIALEAH, FL-- A clinically proven, minimally invasive technology for treating chronic sinus inflammation is now available at Palmetto General Hospital. The Balloon Sinuplasty™ system by Acclarent™ uses a small catheter and balloon to quickly open and expand blocked sinuses.

Sinusitis is one of the most common chronic health problems in the U.S., afflicting 37 million Americans each year. Patients suffer headaches, congestion, fatigue and other symptoms. This condition can significantly impact physical, functional, and emotional quality of life.

Historically, sinusitis patients were limited to two treatment options: medical therapy such as antibiotics and topical nasal steroids, or conventional sinus surgery such as Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). Medical therapy can help alleviate symptoms as many as 80% of patients but is inadequate for the rest. For them, sinus surgery is often the best option. However, FESS is a conventional surgery that requires bone and tissue removal in order to open up blocked sinus passageways. In lieu of a desired treatment, approximately 900,000 patients each year elect to live with painful sinus conditions.

There is an alternative solution in endoscopic sinus surgery with the Balloon Sinuplasty™ technology by Acclarent. A small, flexible balloon catheter is placed through a nostril into the blocked sinus passageway. The balloon is then inflated to gently restructure and open the sinus passageway, restoring normal sinus drainage and function.

Dr. Julio Torres is one of the first physicians in this area to offer this technology. He said, “The Balloon Sinuplasty™ devices by Acclarent are a true advance in sinus care because in many cases it can be done without removing any tissue or bone. That means faster recovery times and less post-procedure discomfort. In fact, many of my patients have been able to return to normal activities within 24 hours and have had significant improvement in their symptoms.”

The international, multi-center study, CLEAR1, published in the prestigious journal, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2, confirmed at all time points – 24-week, one-year and two-years - earlier clinical validation that the Balloon Sinuplasty™ instruments are safe and effective for opening blocked sinuses. The CLEAR study reported:

91.6% functional patency rate at one-year; 70 patients (217 sinuses)
No serious adverse events at two-years; 65 patients (195 sinuses)
Symptom improvement for 85% of patients across the two-year-postsurgery period.

DALLAS –– Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC) today announced that Palmetto General Hospital is one of 38 hospitals it operates to have received quality designations through CIGNA HealthCare, a subsidiary of CIGNA Corporation (NYSE:CI).

Palmetto received eight CIGNA Quality Designations for the following areas: Caesarean Section, Laparoscopic Gallbladder Removal, Gastric Bypass, Heart Attack, Total Abdominal Hysterectomy, Total Knee Replacement, Stroke and Vaginal Delivery

These quality designations are based on outcomes for treatment of 29 surgical procedures and medical conditions. The patient outcomes data are in part based on a hospital’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare measures, Leapfrog Patient Safety Measures, and their mortality and complication rates.

The designations indicate superior outcomes and about 57 percent of CIGNA HealthCare’s network hospitals receive a quality designation for treatment of at least one condition.

“These designations provide evidence of our hospitals’ commitment to providing high quality care,” said Stephen L. Newman, M.D., Tenet’s chief operating officer and interim chief medical officer. “Such recognitions demonstrate that our hospitals and staff deliver care that exceeds nationally recognized standards for the specific condition.

In fact, 76 percent of Tenet’s hospitals received a CIGNA HealthCare quality designation. We also have increased the total number of designations at our hospitals from 134 in 2007 to 214 in 2008, a 60 percent increase.”

In addition to these quality designations, 21 Tenet hospitals have received 60 Center of Excellence (COE) designations for 2008 from CIGNA HealthCare. These COE classifications mean that the hospitals met CIGNA HealthCare’s high standards for quality and efficiency.

“Our goal is to provide individuals with valuable information regarding those hospital programs that achieve both superior quality outcomes and superior affordability,” said Dick Salmon, M.D., Ph.D., senior national medical director at CIGNA HealthCare. “The Centers of Excellence designations are readily available to patients who use CIGNA Care Connections, an integrated online provider directory or through CIGNA HealthCare’s clinical resources such as 24 Health Information Line nurses.”

Hialeah, Fla. - April 10, 2007 - Palmetto General Hospital has added digital mammography to its comprehensive diagnostic services dedicated to women and the early detection of breast cancer. This new equipment incorporates advanced imaging technology that provides sharp images and provides high quality care.

Digital mammography allows the radiologist to view the x-ray image more closely, meaning they can zoom in on suspicious or concerning areas and make immediate decisions as to whether additional images are needed. Although a digital mammogram is like a traditional film-screen exam in that it uses x-rays to generate images of the breast, it takes less than half the time of traditional exams and allows the radiologist to review the images while the patient is still in the examination room.

"Our goal is to provide exceptional care to the women of our community," explained. Ana Mederos, CEO of Palmetto General Hospital. "Digital mammography allows us to deliver even more advanced, personalized care to our patients in the fight against breast cancer."

Digital mammography offers a number of other practical advantages and patient conveniences. Because there is no waiting for film to be developed it can reduce the time patients spend in the breast center, as well as reduce the need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure. Digital images are easily stored and transferred electronically, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films, which can be misfiled or lost in transit.

Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics demonstrate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in their life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman's survival.

Palmetto General Hospital, part of Tenet's Miami-Dade/Broward Health Network, is a 360-bed acute-care hospital located at 2001 West 68th Street in Hialeah, Florida. The hospital has served the medical and health care needs of Northwest Miami-Dade and Southwest Broward counties for more than 30 years. Palmetto General Hospital offers a broad range of services, including adult and pediatric emergency rooms, maternity, mental health, cancer center, hyperbaric, wound care, sleep disorders center, a cardiac program that includes both medical and surgical services and a bariatric program that has been designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Palmetto General Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the nation's oldest and largest hospital accreditation agency. The hospital has earned a five-star rating and is ranked among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for maternity care by HealthGrades, a health care quality ratings company, and is one of only 34 hospitals nationwide to earn Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals designation six or more times.
