Palmetto General Hospital’s Diabetes Education Center is certified by the American Diabetes Association. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Our bilingual staff members provide our community with educational materials in English or Spanish as well as personalized diet plans according to our patients’ culture and meal preferences.
The center offers individual or group classes about diabetes self-management. Following are class outlines:
Class 1:
Definition of diabetes Types of diabetes Acceptance of diabetes Overview of available medications, how they work, indications and side effects Goals of monitoring blood sugar at home and AIC
Class 2:
Nutrition and diabetes The role of food Definition of carbohydrates How to plan meals, use the exchange diet system and read labels
Class 3:
Acute and long-term complications of diabetes Prevention of complications Detection and treatments for complications
Class 4:
The role of exercise Exercise instructions Definition of stress and how it affects health and diabetes Stress-reduction techniques
Group classes are provided every Tuesday in English from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Group classes are provided every Wednesday in Spanish from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
